As with almost everything, marketing has changed dramatically in the past decade or so. Not so long ago people were advertising their products, services and businesses in weekly publications like FreeAds and the Yellow Pages, and now it is all about digital marketing.

As such, it is hardly surprising that myths have arisen from the unknown, and factoids have spread so fast and furiously it is hard to tell what is real and what is fake (#fakenews).

That is why we are going to take the time to debunk a few of the marketing myths that have emerged in recent times, which should be able to help you rethink your strategies.

SEO Is All About Google

This is the most common misunderstanding when it comes to digital marketing because focusing all your efforts on your Google ranking is a mistake. Yes, the majority of people use Google when searching for things, but to ignore the rise of other channels such as Pinterest and Amazon will do your business more harm than good. In short, you need to know how to rank higher on these channels too. Social sites, social media platforms, e-commerce channels; all of these use their own algorithms to rank search results, so you need to focus a lot of your energy on understanding these areas too if you want to rise in the overall rankings.

Print Advertising Is Dead

Print is not dead, not by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, print-based marketing strategies are gaining traction because it has characteristics that digital marketing simply cannot match or replicate. Research has shown that advertisers can look to achieve more 25% higher response rates when they combine print and digital, which begs the question, why aren’t you looking at what direct mail cost, and utilising this avenue. It is in the process of reinventing itself, so stop believing what others are saying and get ahead of the market.

Your Website Is Enough

You will set yourself up for failure if you’re relying on your website for all your marketing needs. Only by using a range of marketing approaches can you hope to attract and retain clients, so don’t fall behind the competition because you failed to do this. Use paid ads in Google, keep your blog updated as often as possible, use social media platforms to connect with your clients and customers, and use all of this data to improve yourself as a brand. Also make sure you keep up with the latest marketing trends, which is currently the use of short video marketing, such as those 60-second recipe videos made by Tasty we all see on Facebook.

Any Content Is Good Content

100% absolutely not true. Google is smart, and so other the other search engines out there, and so if you are just filling your website with content for the sake of filling it with content and keeping it up to date you will get caught out. But it isn’t just the algorithms that you need to think about, it is the people that will read this. People know BS when they see it, and that will turn them off. So have a plan about what you want to write, what people will want to read and what ideas will intrigue them, and then stick to this. You want to make your content unique, that is the whole point. Generic information can be got from anywhere, but inside information, expert opinions and clever points of view cannot. Remember that.
