Bossing It: Better Ways To Run Your Business

When you own a company, it comes down to you to make the right calls. Being the boss isn’t easy, but if you can do a good job, you’ll have every chance of making your business a success. If you’re running a new venture or you’re looking for ways to improve the way you manage your business, this guide will provide you with some tips and hints to help you be the best boss out there.

Managing your team effectively

As a company owner, it’s important to lead from the front. If you want your team to work hard for you, it’s important that they believe in you, and they see how much you want to make the business a success. Managing a team of people is no walk in the park, especially if you don’t have any experience of working with others, let alone adopting a senior role. If you’re more used to designing products or coming up with newfangled creations, the prospect of being in charge of a group of ambitious employees can be daunting. If you do have limited experience, and you want to devote your time to other aspects of the business, it pays to delegate. However, even if you have senior managers in place, you should maintain a presence and make an effort with your staff team. Sit in on the meetings, join in the discussion, and get involved in team events. However proactive your role in day to day office life, it’s important that people know who you are, and they have a chance to get to know you better.

Managing a team isn’t just about making sure that everyone knows what they’re doing on a daily basis and hitting targets. It’s also beneficial to focus on morale, and try and make sure that your employees are happy at work. If you enjoy your job, and you feel that your effort is rewarded and valued, it makes sense that you’d want to try harder. Good team morale can make all the difference when it comes to increasing productivity.

Balancing the books

As a business owner, you must be able to generate profit. If you can’t do this, you’re not going to succeed, even if you’ve got a fantastic team or glowing reviews online. If you’re not experienced in handling money and doing the accounts, this is an area you can outsource, but that doesn’t mean you can take your eye off the ball. Ultimately, you are responsible for making sure that the books are balanced, and you’ve got enough money in the account to pay wages and bills every month. If you have an accountant, set up regular meetings, and make sure you understand what’s going on with your finances at all times. If things aren’t looking as rosy as hoped, try and work out ways you could reduce spending and maximize profits. Could you make savings on staffing? Could you drive sales by adjusting your marketing strategy or launching a new incentive? Are your overheads too high?

Preventing problems

Preventing problems is a much better option than trying to cure them. All good entrepreneurs should be aware of the risks involved when it comes to managing a company. Learn from your own experiences and those of others, do some research and find out what kinds of disasters and obstacles you may encounter. Reading blog posts like those available from Start Up Booster can help you identify issues and find solutions before they crop up. If you can pre-empt potential pitfalls, this will save you time and money. From Internet security problems and cash flow issues to logistical hiccups and technical hitches, it pays to be prepared.

Better

Listening

Listening is one of the best ways to improve in business. There’s a difference between hearing what people say to you, and listening to them. If you take comments, ideas, and opinions from employees and customers on board, you can take steps forward. Feedback, even when it’s negative, can be incredibly valuable.

Being the boss isn’t easy, especially if you don’t have much experience of managing people. If you run a business, there’s a lot to think about, and sometimes, it pays to delegate. Despite this, it’s beneficial to maintain contact with your staff team, to listen, and to focus on setting a good example and lifting morale. Your success will be measured by your ability to make money, so take an interest in the books, even if you don’t deal with payments and invoices. It’s beneficial to be involved and to keep an eye on your accounts. A good boss will always know how to react to potentially sticky situations and have backup plans in place.

4 Ways To Deliver Growth As A Trucking Business

Trucking

Even with the rise in fuel prices, the trucking business can prove to be extremely profitable if you get it right. Of course, anything that is profitable always tends to be competitive also, which is why we have seen an increasing amount of new trucking startups come into a fold; many of which fail.

To run a successful trucking business requires more than just an in-depth knowledge of how to drive efficiently and how to pick the right route. It requires you to have your business head screwed on tight and know what it takes to increase revenue. To help you with this, we have come up with some advice to point you in the right direction and help you successfully transition into a business owner.

Trucking

  1. Equipment Is Crucial

This is one of those areas that separates the trucking business from other businesses; your equipment is the most expensive outlay you are likely to have. That’s not all either because you have to choose what equipment, whether you want to buy or lease and equipment that is going to help you save money and improve your brand. It isn’t just commercial trucks we are talking about, either. It is choosing a wheel washing system that will allow you to recycle water and a loading bay that won’t set you back a fortune. So work out what you need and then figure out what it brings to your business.

  1. Growing Your Customers

When you are first starting out, the best way to get new customers is to use a load board. However, it is imperative that you have a focus on making sales calls too. The reason for this is, well, load boards are competitive and that means your bids have to be low and that means your profits will be slim. So make sure you are trying to build a client list outside of load boards, clients that will be long-term partners and repeat customers. By doing this, you should easily double the amount you earn per truck.

Trucking

  1. Know Your Costs

It is impossible to bid sensibly if you don’t know what your costs are. You could bid too high to be competitive or you could bid too low to make a profit. That is why you need to work out what your running costs are, such as fuel, maintenance, repairs, trailer hire and time costs. It can also be beneficial to take out commercial truck insurance to protect your business from any financial loss in case of an accident or theft related to trucks transporting goods. It is also worth considering the journey and destination. After all, a trip through a congested area will be a lot more effort than a rural delivery, so factor this into your costs too.

  1. Boss The Back Office

The more automated you can make your business processes the more efficient your business will run and that is what affects profits. Of course, if you are starting out with just one truck then your back office needs won’t be as demanding as having a small fleet. Either way, having a simple booking process, top notch inventory tracking tech, GPS tracking and accounting software all play an important part in how quickly you will grow as a business. The other major area to focus on is your employes. Getting them to love you has a huge impact on your success, while they will also play a big role in your marketing strategy. Anyway, as a general rule, the more automated your back office, the less time spent in your business and the more time on your business.

Do You Have An Appetite For A Food Business?

If one thing is true about the world of business, it is that it is an adaptable, moldable and flexible world. Not only does it change with the times, the latest developments and breaking news, we can also create business ventures in a large range of different areas. Businesses revolve around all sorts of concepts, from selling people transport, to offering people food and it’s been like that for millennia. If you have some sort of idea, and you think you’re on to a winner, with the right investment you can certainly create a business venture out of that idea.

Food is a great area for business and it will always be a thriving industry, no matter what happens in the future. With brilliant chefs, fantastic ideas and other sorts of ideals backing food businesses  – there’s a lot of scope for ideas. If you’ve got an appetite for business and are driven, with the goals in line to achieve success – you could do worse than starting your own food business. You’ll need a few key skills – you might need to cook unless you’ve got big money to invest, and you’ll need to be able to cook well if you want people to part with their money. The food industry is something that has aged well and has eons of history behind it – so you have a lot of research to do to find out what works, but if something is true about the food industry, it is that since the first farmer learned how to rear and nurture crops into food products, there have been coins in his hand in exchange for his hard work. Food is something that pays, but only if you can get it right.

Appetite

(source)

There are plenty of different food industry ventures, which means there are all sorts of different skills and equipment needed. Every corner of the food industry has its own specific requirements and specialties. A fast food restaurant might need something like the Falcon 400 Twin Pan Programmable Fryer in order to fry food for sale efficiently, while industrial food manufacturers that create supplies for sale will need a tube conveyor to ensure that they are meeting deadlines, demands are targets in a timely and efficient manner. No matter the corner of the food industry that you choose, you’ll need the right equipment behind you in order to succeed – or to be a business at all!

You can’t just do what you want in the the food industry though. All areas of business are sworn to certain laws and regulations, but the food is something that is heavily regulated – as it should be. With health and hygiene concerns being the main thing to obey, there are certain ingredients that are prohibited from use – there is a lot to read up on here, no matter which part of the food industry you start up in. Flaunting these rules won’t just mean a slap on the wrist, it could lead to ruin. Your next venture could be in food – or dining, but it needs to have your full focus.

Data, Structure And People – Intelligence Where It Matters Most

In the world of business intelligence refers to the ability to collect the relevant information and to apply the new knowledge to further projects, whether these are financial, strategic, HR-related, or communication-focused. At the core of the principles of intelligence lies the double ability to collect the right data and to take an informed and unbiased decision – with Power BI vs Tableau being the two industry leader tools in doing so. To put it in other words, a business without intelligence is running towards a wall. Intelligence can be applied directly to business data, to your business structure, to your interactions with your staff, and to the way your brand communicates with your audience.

Matters

Business intelligence

Understand Your Data

Data are part of your everyday business routine. Marketing data, business performance, and even business investment, data are in every activity of your company. But the main problem with data is that they can easily get overwhelming. It’s difficult to focus on the most relevant pieces of information when you have so much at the same time. It’s not uncommon for companies to work with business intelligence consultants to identify the relevant data for business growth. This simple step is essential to help the business create a successful strategy that can address weaknesses and opportunities. BI consultants tend to play an active role in defining future business strategies. You may also need a software to help you manage your data. If you want to know how, click for more info here.

Understand Your Structure

There is a kind of intelligence that tends to be easily ignored in the business world: It’s the information that relates to the structure of your business. What is it? To put it in simple words, the structure of your business defines whether your staff work flexible hours or a set schedule, describe the kind of hierarchy that your have in your company – vertical or horizontal – and look at ways to optimize the productivity of your employees. It’s about defining whether the way your business is built works for what you are trying to achieve. For instance, with more and more employees demanding a healthy work/life balance there is an argument for flexible and remote work options against standard hours. Structure intelligence reshape your business to help you to meet your objectives.

Matters

Vertical hierarchy

Understand Your Staff

Your employees are the most precious resource in your company. They create growth, they can be your biggest advocates, and they can bring innovative solutions to tackle everyday challenges. But employees can only be as good as they feel in your company. Consequently, it is your role as an entrepreneur or a manager to ensure that your company has a form of people intelligence. It’s about understanding the pain points in your employee’s tasks and removing these, whether it means investing in a new booking system or ensuring that overtime is minimal.

Understand Your Audience

It is said that creativity is the highest form of intelligence. Indeed, it doesn’t only collect information about a specific topic, but it also shows the ability to address findings through the making of something new. When it comes to your customers, the creative intelligence helps you to understand their needs and to define a meaningful messaging in return. Creativity is an essential factor in keeping your company competitive and successful. Indeed, it is what differentiates your business from your competitors. Without creative intelligence, your business becomes unnoticeable.

How Can Building Firms Build A Great Reputation?

There are a lot of problems with PR in the building and construction industries. Big accidents, bankruptcies, and unscrupulous businesses have brought a lot of disrepute for the rest to contend with. Contracting and hiring are a huge part of an industry that relies on great skills and fast turnarounds. So how can you turn your company’s reputation into a great reputation that will reap rewards?

Build By Event

Using social media to detail the day-to-day events for your company can be a cheap and cheerful way of connecting with customers. Let’s face it, not every one of the people on your team is a great talker. They’re not front-of-house types – that’s not their job! But they’re skilled, experienced, fast, and safe. They do their work well, so start singing their praises on your FaceBook page, and your Twitter feeds.

Reputation

Talk about the projects they’re undertaking, and how they’re successfully tackling the challenges. Add photos of them working hard and those all-essential before and after pics. Turn each phase into an event. If you can connect the dots between historic projects, that can be even better. This is especially helpful when your prospective clients are checking to see you can do their type of job.

Build By Association

Work with reputable firms and talk about how you work together in your newsletters and social media posts. This can do you both a lot of good. After all, nobody can work solo in construction, so you’re going to have a lot of suppliers and contractors you can associate with. Their reputation can help bolster yours so pick and choose who you work with wisely.

Reputation

Talk about the interesting jobs and make a story about it, complete with a headline. Write about the day you needed a diesel knuckle boom lift hire firm to help you get over the top of your construction site. Heavy machinery and unusual sights make for brilliant photo ops too. When you needed a crane to reach higher than the tallest building in your city, you can even push to make it newsworthy with a clever press release.

Build Up Useful Information And Support Education

There are always going to jobs in building and construction. And there will always be young people looking for a career for life in your sector. This could be a huge and untapped pool of talent to nurture as your business grows. Most importantly, your attention to the development of your industry can make you a subject matter expert and a voice of authority.

Reputation

For each blog post, include a few facts and figures that could be educational and informative. Talk about the training and education that are needed to work those kinds of jobs. Discuss the science behind the projects. You could even include short how-to videos for some of the simpler tasks. By posting a variety of useful material each week, your website can rank higher in search engines.

Building a reputation can take time, and it will also take a little ingenuity and creativity. It’s about trust, and it’s about information. These things will go a long way to help your business build a reputation as a market leading builder.

The Worst SEO Mistakes You Could Be Making

As you’ve probably heard from many other sources, harnessing the power of organic search is one of the best ways to ensure the long-term success and health of your business. Every modern business owner understands the value of a well-executed SEO campaign, but in trying to carry these out, many CEOs and managers make seriously detrimental blunders. Here are some of the worst ones you can make.

Forgetting About On-Site SEO

One of the most common and damaging SEO mistakes is neglecting to optimise every page on your site for targeted keywords. Using your company blog as a tool for content marketing is a great idea, as long as the writers assigned to it know what they’re doing. Okay, you’re carrying out all the right keyword research, and running each post you publish through a list of checks. Great start! However, have you thought about separate meta descriptions for each page? Have you run your site through a good crawler to check for any broken links? If you answered “no” to any of these, then you’re going to be wasting your time, and more importantly, your money! You need to make every page on your site mesh with modern SEO conventions as much as possible, giving every little facet to your site its own value.

Over-Doing Inbound Anchor Text

Mistakes

Image from Flickr

Link building is a critical part of SEO, as you probably know already. However, there are a lot of businesses out there that fail to approach it in the right way. Some are still even using private blog networks to try and help their rankings, and only wind up getting penalised by Google for it. Whenever you’re working on SEO, you need to bear in mind that search engines are all centred around giving users a great experience. They exist to bring users the most relevant, engaging, and useful content anywhere on the web. You also need to remember that the average user is completely clueless about SEO. How many times do you think most people link to blog posts with anchor text that happens to match the keywords that the webmaster is trying to get that page to rank for? Make sure you’re balancing out keyword anchor text with naked URLs and branded anchors. Fail to do this, and sooner or later, you’ll see your rankings decline.

Keyword Repetition

In search engine optimisation, it’s always a good idea to target a narrow niche. However, you should avoid repeating the same keyword across several pages of your site. If you do this, you’ll create a conflict, forcing Google to decide which of the pages it will rank. Each page needs to stand out from the rest, and the keywords you’re applying should be a part of this. If you have several pages all ranking for the same keyword, ultimately, they’re going to drag each other down SERPs. You should also avoid any kind of duplicate content across several pages of your site. If you’ve got a single product listed in multiple pages, for example, use redirects to forward traffic towards better-performing content.

You Need To Know About SEO – And You Need To Know It Now

 SEO

Flickr

SEO is an oft spoken about affiliate marketing strategy, but one that’s not widely understood. For that reason, it is effective. However, SEO marketing has so many potential benefits for your business and the clients who encounter it at the same time, that it could be considered the most effective and organic method of marketing ever devised.

Thanks to the growing nature and ease of access to information on the web, the modern day superpower of the internet is giving people free informative content on almost every website you can visit. Aside from social media and internet marketing, there has been relatively little modern revolutions in the way standard marketing strategies work.

Enter SEO. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is offers your prospective client something in return for their exchange in reading the blog or website that your marketing links are hosted on. Informative content is a net positive for the internet no matter how you look at it, and SEO takes this into account. Loosely defined, SEO is concerned with raising the authority ranking on the search engine’s listings.

In a simple example to help you understand how this works, consider the following imaginary scenario. John, the hero of our tale, runs a surfing shop on a beach front. He’s looking for a new veneer to coat his boards in because the original doesn’t seem to be holding up on the new material that is being adopted into modern surfboards. He types into a popular search engine, usually Google, the search term “Effective veneers for the modern surfboard,” hoping to find a wealth of information that will not only efficiently point him in the right direction, but might explain why this veneer is worth adopting in the first place.

He reads the article, and becomes excited that such a simple solution exists. He considers stocking his store with the item in question. Luckily, organically and subtly embedded into the content piece that he is reading, John finds a link to a manufacturer or wholesaler of this product. Who would have thought?

Luckily, because of the well researched nature of the article he just read, he considers it to be authoritative, and looks upon the product with more of an open and friendly mindset than he would have done if a banner advertisement (made at a reputable vendor like 1DayBanner.com) would have intruded on his social media pages. John purchases the veneer and is happy with the whole process. He doesn’t feel like he was unduly sold to, but he also doesn’t feel like he was tricked into buying the product. The whole process happened naturally, and John was free at any time to choose another product or another information source.

However, SEO works on the main psychology that the higher ranked terms on the internet are the ones most worth looking for. This is generally true. You can see through your own internet habits that searching Google for something, you rarely click  to the 30th page listing before you browse the first few returned result pages. The method of raising your article on a blog that can host affiliate links is what’s known as SEO.

SEO is cheap. SEO is efficient. SEO is friendly and unintrusive. If you’re unsure, there are many SEO services available to help you out. What’s more, SEO is targeted. John would never have encountered that article had he have run a skiing store. There would have been zero reason for him to have visited that article in question, unless he had an affinity to learn how to surf one summer. Because you’re offering a service or product to someone who has directly attempted to learn more about it, you are exposed to the simple target audience that you’d want to be, without having to spend hundreds or thousands on a targeted social media campaign, messing around with demographics and other superfluous tools.

You can see the results of adapted SEO marketing into your business, no matter what your business is involved in. Natural marketing has never held such potential.

How To Make Your Employees Love You

Love

From Wikimedia

Most workers these days have aren’t their companies’ biggest advocates. Ask a cross-section of modern full-time employees, and you’ll hear a surprising amount say that they feel trapped in their job. The people who work for you are among your most valuable assets, and you can’t afford to neglect them. If you’re afraid of a strain between your employees and the business at an executive level, here some ways to make them love you.

Know What They Hate About Work

Everyone has things they’ll put up with in their professional life, even though they drain their energy and grind down their mood. In some cases, those tolerations are very specific, for example a company policy which makes it hard for them to spend quality time with their families. In many organizations, these kinds of pain points are experienced universally, by everyone below the very top of the pyramid. This might be a travel-booking system that’s hard to use, or simpler challenges like finding a conference room. Whatever it is at your company that annoys your employees, make sure you understand the issues thoroughly, and do all you can to mitigate or eliminate them.

Focus on their Families

Love

From Wikimedia

Although technology has achieved some amazing things, it’s also eaten into most professionals’ family time. The distinction between free time and work is rapidly fading. More and more company cultures are rewarding their staff for being on-call 24/7. Sure, you may be giving something back to employees through generous retirement plans or learning how to become an investor services advisor. However, you also need to be paying attention to the here and now, and making your employees’ family time a priority. When you’re sensitive to your employees’ needs outside of the office, and demonstrate this regularly, you’ll gain their loyalty faster than you can imagine! Just make sure you’re not treating single employees, or those that don’t have kids, unfairly.

Make the Most of Performance Evaluation

Most CEOs and higher-ups these days think of performance review time as one big hassle, rather than a golden opportunity to analyze, strengthen and support staff skills. You can’t get away from performance evaluation, so instead, try to make this time of the quarter more palatable; both to yourself and your employees. One effective way of doing this is spreading the work out over a longer window of time. While constructive criticism is important, make sure you’re using the time to celebrate employee skills and accomplishments.

Actively Seek Feedback, and Act on It

The best performance evaluations cover management just as much as employees. Start engineering regular and accessible opportunities for getting feedback from your employees. Then, let them hear what you learned from all the feedback you received, and how you’re going to act on it. Finally, make sure you apply it, in a way that will affect your employees and show that you care for the way their work affects them. Don’t get defensive in the face of criticism, but don’t forget to look for positive feedback either.

Beginners' Guide To Monetizing Your Website

Believe it or not, you don’t need to have a revolutionary business idea to make money from your website; you just need a good website. That and a few other things, but if the content and presentation of your site is of a notably high quality, there is no reason why you can’t make a substantial amount of money from it. Some make enough to supplement their current income, others generate so much interest that they’re able to quit their jobs and focus on their websites full time. Keep reading to learn how you can accomplish this for yourself.

Guide

Generate more traffic

It may sound superficial, but to get people interested in your website is to have one that looks well-designed. Without one, the rest of this advice is useless. If you don’t have the experience to create a site that looks professionally done, you can enquire with Boson Website Design or other professional designers to create the perfect website for your purposes. Maybe you’re still in touch with a friend from college who would be happy to help. Once you have an awesome website, make sure you create the killer content to go with it.

Affiliate marketing

Once you’ve established a strong following of loyal readers who trust your opinion, you could make money through affiliate marketing. Say your website focuses on fitness or makeup tips; you could try out products that are relevant to your website, and if you like them you endorse the products to your subscribers. If your audience is interested in the product, they click on an affiliate link, and you get a split of the sale price if they purchase the product. Amazon Associates is a good option for this, as you’re more likely to get paid. Unlike other affiliate links, Amazon Associates pays you if the person you referred buys anything from them within 24 hours, not just the product you recommended to them.

Sell your own product

Many people start out making money on their websites by writing and selling an eBook, or by creating a series of online video training courses. If you publish and sell your product on your own, you have the potential to make the most money on a per sale basis because there’s no one else taking a cut of the profits. It’s not likely that you’ll get it done right away – in fact, it may take you a few failed attempts before you have a viable product – but you shouldn’t let that stop you from trying.

Selling ad space

Big companies are always looking to sponsor blogs because it’s another way of getting their product out to a wider audience, so you can profit from directly selling them ad space on your website. You get paid depending on how many visitors you get, so you stand to make a lot of money if your website is popular. On the other hand, if your site doesn’t get a lot of traffic, you can’t expect to earn as much either.

Content Protection: The Unspoken Issue All Businesses Need To Be Thinking About

The world of business is a competitive one. For every great idea you have, there’s a strong chance someone else has had it too – or that it already exists somewhere in the world. Obviously, with the amount of people who are involved in the business sphere, there is going to be some level of crossover from time to time. But as originality is one thing that sets you apart in a busy market, making sure you keep your integrity is vital for business success. Of course, it’s not that many of us set out to blatantly plagiarize another person’s work. But it can still be worth being mindful of certain copyright issues, even only for the sake of an easy life. Here are a few hints and tips on how you can keep your business authentic, and how you can protect your content too.

Make some changes

So, the worst has happened. You were all ready to launch your business when suddenly, at the last minute you came across another company who is providing the same service as you. Of course, in some sectors, this is inevitable. Maybe your company is recruitment based, and you specialize in IT. There will be many other companies supplying this exact service, and that simply cannot be helped. But if your branding, tone of voice, marketing and service is pretty much identical to someone else’s, you could have a potential issue on your hands. This is especially relevant if this rival is based in the same geographical location as you. To avoid any disputes, see these similarities as an opportunity for you to up your game. It might mean pushing back your launch date a little further, but if you can blow your competition out of the water when it finally arrives, it will have been worth it. Think about the service you provide and what you can do to take it to the next level for your customers. Also, consider your branding, and whether you need to loosen it up a little, or toe the line and present something sleek and corporate to the public eye. The same thing goes if your business is product or invention based. If you find out that someone has made the same item that you have done, see it as a challenge to try and make a better version!

Protect your content

As we now live in the digital age, most business professionals are well aware of the risks posed to them by internet hackers. If you do not have certain regulations in place, such as firewalls and security questions, you could easily be putting your business at risk from online criminals. However, it isn’t always just hacking you need to be worried about. Plagiarism is alive and well on the internet, and it is straightforward for someone to re-publish content from your website or social media and claim that it is their own. This is where something such as DMCA protection services come in – a law that penalized the infringement of copyrighted work on the internet. Make sure you familiarize yourself with this law as if your intellectual property is stolen, you will need to rely on it to get the stolen work taken down.

Take out a patent

Have you had a bit of a Eureka moment, and come up with an invention that you think will change the world? If so, you had better get a patent on it. A patent is legal protection for you and your invention, which can penalize anyone else who makes it, sells it or imports it without your permission. Remember that the longer you operate your business without a patent, the easier it will be for just about anyone to spot your idea and start to copy it themselves. If this happens and you are without a patent, you may not have a leg to stand on. Worse still, the other party may take one out of their own, which turns you out of a legal position altogether. To qualify for a patent, your invention must meet the following criteria. It must be something that can be made or used, it must be new, and it must be a product in its own right (not just a slight modification to something that already exists). If your product meets this specification, you will be in a position to apply for a patent. The process of getting a patent is pretty complex, and if not done the right way, could lead to the loss of legal rights. A licensed patent lawyer who has the skill and experience can easily tackle such issues. Don’t expect to get one immediately though – the average application process can take up to 5 years to complete.

Efficient Ways To Reduce Business Costs

Running a business is never going to be easy. If it was, everyone would be doing it. However, from the start it can be hard to navigate the most difficult element of running a business, and that is the financial aspect. Sure you may be savvy with the spending, and you may try and cut costs where you can. But do you make these changes for the good of the business? Is there anything else that you can do to keep business costs down? I share some of the ideas you may not have considered.

Cut the cost of customer service

Customer service is vitally important to a business. But it can also be a huge expenditure and cost implication to the running costs, so it’s important that you consider other methods available to you. While you still want to promote a good service, you can’t always be the one to add the personal touch. This is when something like a Transactional Bot could help you out. Offering a service where you have a platform in which to answer frequently asked questions. This can be a huge saving as you are using software to do what someone may have been employed to do.

Take your business online

A business can work well face to face, but this can also have additional costs. Such as a shop, a store area or even office costs. An alternative method would be to take your business online. This can mean that your store is digital, and that any conversations are done through the net. This can significantly reduce running costs for your business.

Make it mobile friendly

So many people are using their mobiles these days, so an additional tip would be to make sure your business and website is mobile friendly. You could also consider creating an app to make things easier.

Lower your business overheads

Overheads can come in many forms, such as employee salaries, costs for premises, and even things like stock. A great idea would be to look at all overheads and try and make some reductions as and when you can. Perhaps reducing hours for employees or outsourcing jobs. Even reducing what you hold in stock in order to reduce a major overhead.

Modernise your marketing

Of course, any paid advertising that is getting you results is always going to be paying for itself. But look at your costs in regards to other areas of marketing and try and work out if it is effective to you as a business. Sometimes you may try things that just don’t get you the response you are looking for. Social media is a great way to advertise with very little outgoing unless you pay for sponsored posts or advertising campaigns.

Focus on strategy and your business plan

Finally, sometimes it’s always worth looking back at your business plan and also focusing on strategies in order to help your business grow. Being specific can help to make things more beneficial for you, and of course reduce the costs accordingly.

Can You Really Generate a Second Income From Your Land?

If you are currently sat at home wondering about ways to make a second income or start a home based business, then you could be onto something. Could you, in fact, make money right from your home, using the resources that you have there? If you have some outside space, then there is a lot of money to be made from an agricultural business. More and more people are turning to more natural food, as well as meat and products that are organic and raised locally. So if there is nothing currently near to where you are, then you can be rather confident that there will be a demand for this kind of thing. You could use your land to grow crops or raise animals, as well as taking your agricultural expertise elsewhere. So what is stopping you? Here are several ways to make money from your home, using your land and bit of know-how. Farming and agriculture is big business these days, so why not be part of that lucrative financial pie?

  • Grow Gourmet or Medicinal Foods

There are many foods that can be grown on farms and in outside space that you can sell on to other people. You just need to decide what those foods would be and in what way they would be used. For example, mushrooms; they can be grown both medicinally and for eating. Which will you choose? It could be worth looking into the retail costs of both to see the kind of profit margins that you would be looking at. Then it will help to sway your decision I’m sure.

You could also look to sell to restaurants or become a regular at farmers markets. This can be a great way to network and to grow your potential customer base. So look for simple ways to grow your business, and it will do just that!

  • Use Your Land as a Campsite

If you have a lot of land, but are looking for a fairly low-maintenance way to generate an extra income, then using the land for something like a campsite is a really good idea. It will need some basic upkeep, but on the whole, it pretty much takes care of itself. Showers and bathrooms might need to be built-in, depending on the kind of camping you are choosing to do. So that will have an initial startup cost. But provided the business is marketed well it could go on to generate a lot of extra income, especially if you live in an area that gets favorable weather for a lot of the year. If you don’t get a lot of good weather throughout the year, then this is likely to not be the best option for you as you’d be unlikely to make all of your expenses back.

You could also set up an area for motorhomes to set up. So running water and electrical points is key. You can charge people more for this, so could be a viable option for you. You could also consider selling certain items that you buy at wholesale, to the campers. It isn’t going to be big bucks but can be a good lifestyle business for you to maintain.

  • Gardening Services

If you are particularly green-fingered and have quite a bit of experience in gardening and garden services, then why not market your skill? Gardening seems to be a love it or hate it type of activity. So for people that fall into the latter category, it can be really useful, and they can be willing to pay for this kind of thing. So you could offer your services to local people. You could also start a larger business, where you employ other gardeners but you oversee all of the work. It is going to be a business that makes more money, the more people you have out doing the services. Of course, you’ll need a supply of equipment, so there will be a certain level of money that you’d need to pay for up front. You’d need to find Rhino rotary cutter parts, for instance, as well as gasoline and enough gardening shears and tools to share around your team.

But being out in gardens isn’t the only way to make money from things. You could also look to give lessons to people to teach people your skills. You could run a course for a few weeks at a time with local people, at a community college or community center. People are always looking to hone their skills. So if you’re an expert in your field, then there will be people willing to learn from you (and willing to pay for it). So don’t just see gardening as you being in different gardens pulling weeds each day. There are more options available than you might think.

  • Private Fishing Lakes

If you have lakes, or the space and capability to dig them, then they can be a lifestyle business that takes care of themselves. Normally there are two different types of private fishing lakes. One of which is a classic catch and release lake, where customers will pay to pitch up for the day and just do it for the enjoyment of fishing. The other option is to fish and pay, where they catch the fish, and then they are weighed. The weight of what they have caught will be what they pay to you (as well as a pitch up fee perhaps). Both options are profitable, and could even run alongside each other. You would just need to make sure that the lakes are well stocked with fish, and have certain facilities close by. Often this can team up well with a campsite, as has been mentioned. So there are plenty of ways to combine things make money off your land.

  • Rent Your Land

Property management is a tried and tested business method that is proven to make money, should you invest in the right kind of property at the right time. The same goes for land too. Of course, the time needs to be right. But people will pay to rent your land, especially if there are vast amounts of it. If your mortgage is cleared, then all the money coming to you will be profit. If you want to start another mortgage for a new land, you can visit sites like https://reali.com/new-mortgage/ and see their offer. So a good lifestyle business to have, while you take care of other things. But what would they rent the land for, though?

One option could be for a cellular tower. If you land is quite high up, then it could bring in quite a lucrative amount of money if you were to rent out (or sell) your land. You would get paid pretty well for this kind of thing, but the potential cancer-causing problems could be an issue for you. So just look into it and do some research to see what would make it safer for you. Wind turbines and solar panels are also a great way to make an income from your land. Companies looking to create solar or wind energy will need plenty of space to generate the power. So renting your land for these purposes could be a good option for you, depending on how much space that you have. This is the kind of thing that could work alongside a normal home or farm or the things mentioned above such as campsites or private fishing ponds. So it can be a way to generate income by doing very little.

One other option for renting your land, that will be a little more ad-hoc, could be renting your land out for things like weddings and parties. If you have a large space, it could be the thing that a bride-to-be is looking for. Offer them the chance to hire a marquee and then leave the rest up to them. If you have a barn, this could be renovated and rented out for weddings and parties too. It allows the scope to hire all year round, so worth looking into if you have the space for it.

  • Run a Farm and Open It To The Public

If you have a farm, then you will already know that it is possible to make money from it. However, you could be making more from it. One of the ways to do that is to open up your farm and make certain aspects a petting zoo. People could also come to see a potential working farm and all that that entails. They could assist with milking cows or pulling crops, all dependent on the kind of farm that you have. This can be a great thing for school groups, though, so could be worth looking into for that alone.

I just hope this goes to show that you can be making money off your land. Some things will need more work than others. But it can be quite simple to generate a second income or to even make your home and land a big business. Would be interested to hear what you think to this. Do you have experience in working in agriculture?
